Little Boys and Buzz Cuts

Thing 2, my almost-five-year-old son, has had a buzz cut for going on 2 years. I was dragged into it kicking and screaming, but I have to admit now, that I actually like it a lot.

It was all his idea too. We had just gotten his hair cut not two weeks prior - a cute little boy haircut. Thing 2 decided it was too long, so we went to the "haircut store" for a trim. After one pass with the clippers set on 4, he rubbed it with his hand and immediately said, "shorter!". So shorter we went.

Now, he gets a 2 on top and a 1 on the sides and back. It's short!

Two weeks ago, he surprised us by saying that he wanted to grow it out. Even if it meant combing it every morning (something we haven't had to do in 2 years!). I was even more surprised by how sad that made me. I've grown accustomed to rubbing his cute little prickly head, and I knew I would miss it. It's the little things, you know.

Today he changed his mind. His hair was long enough. So, before he could change his mind, I whisked Thing 2 and his sister, Thing 1, to the haircut store for haircuts all around. He was pleased with his new "do" and so am I. Thing 2 even agreed to whack off an inch from her beautiful long hair! We have soccer starting back up tomorrow, and I could just imagine the nest of tangles her hair would become if we didn't.

After the haircuts, we went to the local outlet mall to buy some new pants ... for both of them. Why do they have to grow so fast? Anyway, as we walked into the OshKosh Outlet store, we were approached by a sales woman.

She did the usual bit ... did we need help? ... did we know this was on sale today? ... etc. As soon as Thing 2 saw her, he walked right up to her and announced, "I got my haircut today!".

Then, he turned his back to her and stuck up his fuzzy little head as high as he could and closed his eyes. He wanted her to rub his head! I gave her the "he wants you to rub his head" hand motion, and she obliged, all the while fighting back laughter. Then he told her to rub the back "'cause that's the best part". Which she again did.

His older cousins would be so proud. Those girls do love to rub the back of his head.

So, life is back to normal around here again. New pants are okay, but a new buzz cut? Ahhh, now that's the ticket!

  1. That sure sounds familiar! I have been shaving my boy's head since he was a year old. (He is now 11). Either a #1 all over or, like you, a 2 on the top and a 1 up the back and sides. Have you considered buying a nice clipper and buzzing him yourself? Buzzcuts are so easy to do and you can save a small fortune doing it yourself vs. the barbershop.

I HATE long hair on boys and men! I guess I'm so used to short hair. I grew up on a farm and my mom always shaved my brothers' heads (usually with a #1, never longer than a #2!). They did chores and field work every day and shaved heads (mom called then "Butch" haircuts) were so much easier to keep clean.

I loved rubbing my brothers' freshly buzzed heads just as I do my son's head now!

Please let me know if you have any questions on kinds of clippers to buy, how to use them, etc. I would be glad to help! Really enjoyed your post!

  2. Send it my way, Julie! I'm sure even I can't mess up a buzz cut too badly. Although, after that last bang trim incident ....

  3. Okay, Sarah. Here are some suggestions. Don't be afraid to spend some money on a nicer clipper. The $20 ones don't last long and can pull the hair due to cheap blades--not fun! Wahl and Oster are two of the best on the market. They have high quality motors and long lasting blades that peel off the hair like a hot knife through butter! Oster has a "Fast Feed" clipper in the $60 range that is very nice. Wahl's "Super Taper" model is nice and also in that price range.

My personal suggestion, though, is the Oster "Model 76." This clipper is the real deal! This is the clipper I've used the past 8 years and it is simply the best made. It's the one professional barbers use. It doesn't use the cheap plastic guides that can fall off in mid-haircut. It uses different metal blades for different lengths. 000 is 1/125 of an inch, 1 is 1/8 inch, 2 is 1/4 inch, etc.

The Oster 76 goes for around $100 to $130, but when you think of what you spend at the barber in a year it's much less than that--and the Oster 76 should last at least 20 years if not a lifetime! (You'll probably be buzzing your grandsons with them!). You won't find these nicer clippers in the department stores. I would suggest buying the clipper on-line through Amazon or a barber supply store. There are many of them on the internet.

Hope this helps! Happy buzzing and please let me know if I can be any help with the buzzing once you get the clipper. I'm here to help!

Sarah, click on this link or paste it in your browser. I'm pretty sure that this is the Wahl Super Taper clipper in this video. Again, I recommend the Oster, but this clipper does a pretty good job for the money.

Doesn't that little fellow look just wonderful after all that yucky long hair is buzzed off?!

    All Best,

  7. Summer's coming. Are you buzzing your little guy yourself yet? I'm giving my boy a "Bald Fade" now. That's a #1 on the top with the back and sides shaved all the way up with a #00000 balding blade. Looks super!

  8. Not yet. We just went to the "haircut store" on Sunday. It's a place called Snip-Its, and they cater to the little ones. Both my kids LOVE to go there, so I almost hate taking him away from it. He'd got with his sister and wind up getting jealous, so we'll probably stick with it for now.

  9. Maybe just use the clipper for weekly "touch-ups," so he can still go to the "store" with Sis. Nice that boys love having their hair buzzed. There must be a "crew-cut gene" in their DNA!

  13. i hate buzzcuts there so ugly.well, the reason im saying this i suppose is that,3 months ago,i got my head buzzed nearly bald with a number one clipper and it was awful!i hated it more then anything.so i am anti buzz-cut as a resault of that.it shook me up alot.

  14. i buzz my boys heads with a number 1 clippperevery summer, and this year i tried a 00000 clipper shave -i thought it would keep them cooler for this summer.but i hated it!they looked almost totaly bald.they, however, loved it,saying they liked the bald look and loved how ti felt.but i felt they looked so bad with such a bald head that i didnt even want them going to camp.luckly it grew back fast.i have decided not to buzz there headswith a number 1 next year, instead i will do a number 2 on the sides and number 4 on the top to acheive a short but not bald look.happy buzzing!

  15. been buzzing my 3 boys heads for 2 years.it all started when my 5 year old cut a chunk of his hair out with my electric razor,so we had to buzz his head.as it was a razor we had to do a 0000 clipper shave. we were suprised that the number 0 clippers didnt totaly make him bald, his head was not smooth after the buzz cut-it had very short stubble remaining.we though it would look bad for just ONE of my boys to have this haircut, and it was summertime so we buzzed all their heads with the number 0 clipper.at first they akll hated it-they even wanted wigs .of course i told them they would not get a wig because of a haircut that half the kids in their school get (we live in texas and have very hot summer so thats why)i told them you look great in a buzz cut(i think they look way better buzzed than with longer hair-they have messy hair when it grows out and they look super in buzz cuts, but i thought i would never buzz them again given how much they seemed to hate it)but they said they hated how bald they looked.then,2 weeks later, they suddenly said they love buzz cuts and want there hair to stay short for good.i was ecstatic.no more combing messy tangeled hair before school.no more ,strawlike hair growing over there eyes.and best off all, they will look great!so,from then on,we have been buzzing there hair with a number 0 clipper in the summer and number 1 on the sides and number 3 on the top in the winter.go buzzcuts!now, remember to vaccinate your childeren against h1n1 influenza-also keep up practicing good hygeine-hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and reminding your childeren to do the same.

  16. i have a 13 year old autistic son who was given a #1 buzz cut on july 22 2009,and he is high level, but the buzz shave sent him over the edge.he ran through the house, screaming about how bald he was,and he wrapped his head in bandages.my poor child still wears hats every where, and each days he has bursts of rage about he buzz shave

  17. buzz cuts are commonplace in are house!
i buzz my 4 boys all year long, but we buzz them much shorter during summertime.in the winter,my boys have a #6 clipper cut (which does not even look like a buzzcut, just a typical short haircut),except for my six year old who has a #1 buzz cut all year long.then, come mid-may,i take my boys out into the back yard and shave them all with the #1 clippers-except my 8 year old,who like a 0000 clipper shave on the sides and a #2 on the top.we live in the south carolina suburbs,so it is-HOT!almost all of my childerens male classmates get buzz cuts for the summer, and we hosted a "buzz cut party" last may 16 for all the boys in my childeens classes.i shaved all of them my self-and parents and childeren alike were delighted with the results!merry christmas and happy buzzing!jimmy.

  18. Hi,

Just finished buzzing my husband and ten year old son with 00000. They both look very cute. I do not like any hair on a man's head. My son is now so used to being bald that I have buzz it every Sunday.

  19. Hey, Sarah! It's been over a year since we chatted last. How are you? Did you have a chance to click on the link I posted and watch that cute little boy having his hair buzzed? Isn't he a cutie--and looks SO much better once all that hair is taken off!

Have you tried using a clipper yourself yet? I'm still buzzing my son's hair. Going skin tight now that warm weather is here.

Just thought I would check in. I'd love to here back from you!

    All Best,

    Julie (Buzzcutmom)

  21. I have been keeping my 9 year old nephew this summer. He asked for a #1 buzz at first, I suggested a complete smooth shave just once, and he liked it so much, I have been shaving him bald all summer. Kids are funny aren't they ?
